Luxury Holidays North America / New England

Six States, four seasons, one unforgettable journey through a part of America that blends culture and history with an unsurpassed natural beauty.

Playground of presidents and poets, New England delights at every turn. Each season brings its own spine-tingling pleasures, be it the pristine snow-clad winter slopes or the blaze of crimson-to-gold colours that herald the arrival of fall.

Be beguiled by the sinuous coastline of Maine, dotted with rocky islands and backed by majestic mountains. Each village seems more enchanting than the last – Kennebunkport, Ogunquit, York – century-old inns and intimate galleries abounding.

Hike the Appalachian Trail, camera primed for sightings of moose and loon; delve into the natural beauty of Acadia National Park. In Connecticut, there are trails of a different kind, followed by wine lovers seeking out the state’s renowned wineries.

History leaps off the map in Massachusetts, from Boston to the quaint charms of Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard, whilst Vermont, the Green Mountain State, exudes enchantment with its picture-perfect scenery, scenic hiking trails and glorious skiing.

There is tranquillity to be found in the pretty coves and bays of Rhode Island, the sheltered beaches of Narragansett Bay contrasting with miles of surf-pounded shoreline, it’s colonial past makes it a big draw for history buffs.

Whilst each state differs deeply from its neighbours, the love of good food is omnipresent, be it a huge fresh lobster, sumptuous seafood chowder or a warm slice of blueberry pie. There is much to gorge on in irresistible New England.

New England Through the Seasons:

Spring showcases New England’s love of gardening; colourful festivals celebrate the emerging daffodils, tulips and roses. Sample maple sugar treats at a sugarhouse and see how this New England delicacy is made.

Summers in New England are hot and sunny. Bright blue skies and green forests create a perfect backdrop for cheerful flowers and colourful beach umbrellas. The perfect combination of beach and mountain ensures there’s something for everyone, from lazing on white sand to hiking, biking or rock climbing in the state parks.

New England is famed for its blaze of crimson to gold colours that herald the arrival of fall. From mid-September to November the colours ‘turn’ through the states – try a hot-air balloon ride to see the foliage from the skies.

Blanketed in snow, New England sparkles during the winter months. Winter sports enthusiasts are more than catered for with a choice from skiing, snowboarding, showshoeing, cross-country skiing and more.

Relax in the evening by the fireplace of a cosy inn or lodge. Winter is also a perfect time for a city break – Boston has superb shopping and dining as well as museums and historical sites to explore.

When to visit New England

New England has four distinct seasons and is truly a year-round destination. In the summer season, days are sunny and warm, but the night air can sometimes be cooler in northern mountains and coastal regions. The fall months bring the best travelling weather where the air is crisp and cool. The winter season is snowy, with around 35 inches per year in the south of the region, whilst the upper mountains receive over 100 inches annually. Spring is mild but showers can be expected.
